The Survey

Independent not-for-profit media are emerging all over Europe. They arose for different reasons and face different challenges, but they have a lot in common. This innovative media scene was mapped for the first time in the 2022 report “The New Sector” by the German journalism organisation Netzwerk Recherche.

Building on this knowledge, NR has now coordinated a large-scale survey of European independent media, looking in particular at

  • their funding structures,
  • the role of audience research in their business strategies,
  • external factors influencing their choice of business model.

The survey will lead to a report on the state of independent media in Europe and an interactive map presenting all media that participated in the survey. The report will provide a new knowledge base for analysis and comparison between countries. It will be an opportunity to share experiences and insights. The report and the map will be published in late November 2024.
